A day in Columbus

Named after the famed explorer and discoverer of America Christopher Columbus, the city of Columbus is situated in the state of Georgia. It also happens to be the seat of Muscogee County. Columbus is renowned for some of the worlds greatest inventions including Coca-Cola and the much less renowned RC Cola. So what can one expect on a normal day out in Columbus.

Columbus was founded during 1828 through an act of the Georgia legislature. The town is situated on the accessible part of the banks of the Chattahooche River. The opposite side of the Chattahooche river used to be inhabited by native Indians until their forceful removal in 1836. That’s why it is a must to go down to the Columbus museum situated on Wynnton Road which showcases local as well as international history of Columbus.

While taking a relaxing stroll to the Museum be sure to head over to heritage park where the statute of Mr John Pemberton is seated on a park bench. He was the pharmacist turn inventor who created our household favorite beverage Coca-Cola. The story goes that he invented the drink while trying to come up with a cure for his wounds sustained in the American civil war. The battle which was held in 1860 is the last recorded battle in the American Civil war. It is during this battle named “The Battle of Columbus” that Mr Pemberton was injured. Interesting fact is that the first beverage he produced was alcoholic and Mr Pemberton did not call it Coca-Cola but was called “Pemberton’s French Wine Coca”.

Every year during fall the cemetery of Linwood in which Pemberton is buried is home to the annual rumble. Many historic persons are buried here and you can participate in a guided tour among the tombstones of many who are buried there and learn their life stories. Columbus is also home to Fort Benning, the largest military infantry in the United States and the world. Established in 1918 Fort Benning is also known as the home of the Infantry.

If you make your way downtown be sure to make a stop at the famous Springer Opera House. It has been home to many live performance and was opened during February 1871 and was named by Governor Jimmy Carter as the State Theater of Georgia. Beyond the beautiful parks and great scenery Columbus also boasts the worlds largest urban water rafting course. So for those looking to combine adrenaline and outdoors its a must to make your way down to the River Walk.

If that is not enough for those looking for adrenaline, Columbus is home to a few spooky areas as well. Such as the Springer Opera House, that people say is haunted by Abraham Lincoln’s assassins brother Edwin Booth. Others have claimed that the bridge at Whitesville road is where you can hear babies crying.

Beyond that you can expect really friendly people, with a good sense of community and family. The area is rich with American history and culture and one can really experience the lives of those who live there.
